The story behind Onam or Why do we celebrate Onam?

There lived an ASURA king by the name Mahabali. Though he was an ASURA, he was a good and great king loved by his people. He looked after his kingdom and people very well. People lived with equality and there was no room for discrimination. Hence the land where he ruled became more beautiful and prosperous than heaven.

Now the spineless Devas were jealous because no people bothered to care about them or even worshipped them. So the Devas went to Lord Vishnu and sort for help. Vishnu took the avatar of Vamana and went to Mahabali. Vamana asked for 3 feet of land from Mahabali. Mahabali, being generous granted the wish. Then, Vamana became an enormous giant and took the other world and earth in two feet. As there was no other land, Mahabali told Vamana to place his feet on his head. Trickster Vamana did so and sent Mahabali to underworld. Before leaving to the underworld Mahabali asked for one wish from Vamana- that he may visit his land ‘Kerala’ once a year. Vamana agreed.

So the day Mahabali returns to visit his land, we celebrate Onam – with grand celebrations.

Now the question – Why do we celebrate Onam?

Mahabali was an ASURA king and ASURA’s are bad according to so called Devas. But Mahabali was a great king, loved by his people. Unlike other festivals where Devas conquers Asuras, Onam is quite different. Here a good man is defeated for being too good to his people. Onam is a celebration for the return of that good King. Onam is a reminder that no matter what your origins are, if you are good to your people and loved by your people, you will be remembered and you will be worshipped.

Chaos in the calm sea of thoughts

There are days in your life where thoughts just crowd your mind. You do not know where to focus. You do not know what to do. Memories come one after another, like the waves in the sea. You could make a whole story out of it. But if somebody read your story they might just think that you are utterly mad.

I am planning to write a book again. But the problem is that when I write something, I get a story for another book. This cycles keeps repeating and I am not able to finish even a book. It is been more than 8 months after my first book got published. Yes I am a lazy and lost writer. I have few fans. But I am not writing anything for anyone. I am writing to understand myself. Every time I write something I am able to see the deep views in my mind. It is said that, the thoughts inside you shapes your individuality. So if you really want to know who you are, just witness your thought attentively. You will be able to decide soon.

See I am not having a topic for one discussion. I am dragging you from one topic to another, just like my thoughts. There is nowhere to go and no necessity to reach anywhere.

Into the world of Writing

After my first book, people around me often ask me these questions…

“How much money you gained in first book?”

“Is your first book a hit?”

“When is your next book coming?”

“Are you going to make this a full time career?”

“We have not heard from you for a while, are you writing your next book?”

“Why did you stop writing?”

“What are you doing now?”

Sometimes these questions are interesting, sometimes annoying.

The truth is that I never wrote any book to become famous or earn money. I love writing. Writing is one of the way in which I can express myself. I am not a talkative person who keeps indulging in conversation with people. But when I write it is like flowing water. Words come after so many so many words. It is like I can be peacefully myself when I am writing.

For a while I have been reading books. There are so many books available in amazon. Thanks to self publishing phenomenon, even the least bit known authors is finding their place in writing niche. The more I read the more I understand the world.

I do not watch TV for the simple reason that it never shows the full picture. Media shows us what they want us to see and the average people without even thinking give a common trending response. This is the reason why I shifted my attention to YouTube and books, here you are in control of what you read or see.

In short, I am back to writing now. So many short stories and events are coming in my mind. I just have to keep typing J

This blog is dedicated to Lalith Kishore. He just dragged me back to the world of writing by a simple question. I will be on writing mode now.

So many books, so less time

There are so many books in the world. One may never read all the books. But one can definitely make his own category of books to read.

Everyone has interest in a particular topic or genre. I love books related to philosophy, religion, poems by mystics. It elevates my mood.

Yet you don't have time to read all the books. When I finish reading a book it is like mission accomplished. If I read a meaningful and thoughtful book, it makes my day.

By reading more books, I feel I accomplish more things in life. It is an energy drink to my soul.

Now I am on reading mode. That is why I have not written anything after my first book. Yet I don't feel blank or sad.

But don't worry I will be back.

How my near and dear ones reacted to my first book?

"Hey, Mom I published a book on amazon." I called my mom and said to her.

"Oh… (Long pause) What is amazon?" My mom asked me.

My mom is not at all an online shopper. She is a very simple woman from a small town in Kerala. So I understood her difficulty in understanding what I said.

"Mom, do you remember that I used to buy books online from Flipkart? Amazon.in is just like Flipkart. We can buy things and sell our things." I replied

"Oh, good! How much will you get per month?" The next inevitable question.

"It depends on how many units people buy! Only after 2 months, I can say how much I earned!" I said confidently to my mom

"Oho... So it is not a stable income. What about your teaching job? Aren't you looking for a job in teaching field? You will get easily job there and it is a stable income also. Moreover, you can manage your family also."

Very few Indian parents understand about your passions. Rest all wants you to live a normal life. Study well, get a good job, earn money, get married, continue the job, have kids and so on. I just got married and that is why my parents insist on continuing the job. Not just any job…. A job that gives you fixed salary at the end of the month.

"Mom, this is just a beginning. Wait and see! Where is grandma? I want to talk to her!" I asked mom
Grandma took the phone and started having routine chats with me. I gave her the good news that I published a book on amazon. She also was not aware of amazon. So I explained everything to her. She also insisted that I need to have a consistent income.

I informed my dad about my first book. It didn't surprise me when he asked me what amazon was. After all, my parents are from small town and live a very simple life. Work hard, earn your bread, share it with your family, live a simple life. This is their philosophy.

My sister was amazed to hear my first book. But soon the conversation ended in the job matter.
My friends were well excited about my book. They purchased it and started rating on amazon. I was so happy when I got my first ratings and reviews from them.

They loved my style of writing. They gave me a lot of suggestions. They supported me and encouraged me.

The most important part is that I love writing. Whether there is any reader or reviewer or fan or not, my love for writing never ceases. It sets me free. I love falling in the world of my books and writing.
Yup, I am an introvert but talented.
